Concert Review: Rilo Kiley at the Avalon, 9/21

Last Friday, I had the pleasure of attending the first free concert of the 07-08 WBRS year. Fortunately, the concert happened to fall on my anniversary with my girlfriend(sorry, ladies), so it presented me with a good opportunity to look more chivalrous than I actually may be. To set the scene, I came into the show with really high expectations since I absolutely had a blast the last time I saw RK, so I thought I might be setting myself up to be let down a little bit. Fortunately, Rilo Kiley are not a band known to slack off in their live shows. In fact, I was especially pleased by the fact that they took a surprisingly large portion of their set from their earlier album with a nice selection of new material spread throughout. This is not to say that I don't enjoy their new album, but still, neither of their past two albums have touched The Execution of All Things, in my opinion. Still, Jenny Lewis sounded great (looked great too *wink*), Blake Sennett was rocking out, and the rest of the band was tight as always.

The Music Blog is Back.... With Charts!

Hey there! With a new year comes change, and this year, one of those changes at WBRS is the rebirth of the WBRS Music Blog. I'm Jeremy, one of the Music Directors this year, and I (along with, hopefully, some other key players in the music department) will be keeping you all updated on what's going on in Radioland. I'll be posting the WBRS charts here weekly so you all can see what's blowing up, and in addition, I'll be documenting much of my experience as an MD by sharing concert and new music reviews as well as interviews and anything else of particular relevance to a music blog. So get ready... here it comes!

Radio 200 Adds:
1 DEVENDRA BANHART Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Canyon Matador-XL
2 TWO GALLANTS Two Gallants Saddle Creek
3 MUM Go Go Smear The Poison Ivy Fat Cat
4 FUTURE KINGS OF NOWHERE THE FUTURE KINGS OF NOWHERE
5 DETHKLOK Dethalbum Williams Street

While this wasn't a huge week for adds in terms of widely-anticipated releases, there certainly was no lack of good releases. The Future Kinds Of Nowhere were kind of a random find for me among the CDs I got in this week, and they ended up being surprisingly talented. I'd check them out if you're into bands like The Weakerthans or Bright Eyes. Mum are also excellent as always, continuing their signature style of glitch-pop. This one might not be their best, but it would be hard to hold anyone up to the standards of several of their earlier albums. Finally, Dethklok's debut album should come as a pleasant surprise for anyone who has seen the TV show Metalocalpyse. If you haven't seen this show yet and the idea Spinal Tap meets Metallica's Some Kind Of Monster on Adult Swim sounds appealing, you should start watching immediately.
