Arts View

Arin Prisand, Arts Coordinator

Arts Corner is the WBRS News program filled with reviews, previews, and interviews. Every Monday night at seven o'clock, WBRS brings you entertainment updates for arts related events at Brandeis and in the Boston Area. Each edition of Arts Corner gives the listener a feature interview, a movie review, a concert review (featuring selections from the various artists) and plenty of ticket giveaways.

We send our reporters out to review the best of Boston entertainment. They have returned with the scoop on The Who's "Tommy", The Boston Ballet's "Giselle", The Ringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey Circus and the Boston Symphony Orchestra, as well as interviews with the members of +LIVE+, The Specials and comedian Dana Carvey. If this sounds exciting to you and if you are interested in theatre, dance, concerts, festivals, exhibits, bands, movies, performance and visual art, come and join our growing Arts Corner family. We are always looking for creative writers and contributors to help WBRS in promoting culture and the arts.

Even if you cannot join our staff, you can still join in the fun. Be sure to listen to Arts Corner Monday nights at seven. Chances are if you name it, we've seen it and we will tell you all about it.

Act One

Jess Shulman, Act One DJ

"Come on along and listen to, the lullably of Broadway..." on Act One, Sunday evenings from six to seven. Join me, Jess Shulman, to hear the best of musical theater, old favorates and new smash hits, as well as a rare recording or two. "Anything Goes" on this show, so call in your requests at 736-5277, that's 5BRS. There's something for every "Tommy," "Annie," "Joseph," Dolly", and all the other "Guys and Dolls," whether they live on "42nd Street" or "Sunset Boulevard." If you're a real "Music Man" or part of the "Chorus Line," Act One is the show for you... OK, enough name dropping. Seriously, if you are a showtune fanatic or just curious, Act One is the hour to hear all of your favorites. From time to time, I'll even feature some special guests. In October, for instance, we had a special live broadcast by the cast of "Godspell", performed by Brandeis' own musical theater group Tympanium Euphorium. There's no telling what I'll have on this semester. Tune in this Sunday for an hour of all of the magic and magnificence that is musical theater.

WBRS News

Leigh Kessler, News Director

The entirely student run news department at WBRS has come a long way over the years. Years ago, an anchor would read newspaper stories over the air. "My, oh, my, how the times have changed."* Newstalk 90 is ready for the twenty-first century. Datebook, our daily half hour of news, has up-to-the minute satellite news wire service. Our team of reporters produce professional style feature and investigative stories about Brandeis. We give you a summary of news ranging from who spoke on campus, to what President Clinton said in his latest press conference. Our national stories are accompanied by expert analysis from Brandeis University professors.

The talk hour begins with Arts Corner, which is our weekly entertainment update. Hosted by Arin Prisand, Arts Corner presents an hour of reviews, previews, and interviews every Monday (a feature on Arts Corner appears elsewhere in this program guide). Tuesday night brings Newstalk :90's hottest new show, Botton Up! Hosts Josh Block and Adam Guttel lead discussions and interviews on technology, politics, and society with a college spin. The world is changing and Bottom Up! is helping you along. On Campus, Newstalk :90's longest running talk show, comes every Wednesday night. Your host, Josh Berlin, interviews Brandeis administrators and gets the answers to your call-in questions. Sportsnight Conversations wraps up our Newstalk :90 programming week every Thursday night as we interview local Boston sports personalities. This year the WBRS news department has its highest number of personnel ever. We are even expanding into morning news with regular news updates on Breakfast Serial, WBRS's new wake up show. We have a news staff hungry for the latest scoop and we produce our show with pride. If it's news, we'll bring it to you. 6:30 to 8 pm, Monday through Thursday, Newstalk 90: is your only up to the minute news source.

All Strikes, No Balls: WBRS Sports

JJ Berney, Sports Director

While professional baseball and hockey abandoned their fans in 1994, WBRS Sports did not.

The WBRS Sports department delivered live coverage of Brandeis Judges' baseball, soccer and, of course, basketball. WBRS strives to bring Brandeis Athletics to the Greater Boston Area.

As the basketball season winds down, expect to hear Brandeis Men's and Women's Basketball through the post-season, including the Women's NEW-8 tournament.

When March begins, so do baseball and softball (at least for the Judges that is -- sorry Red Sox!) The Brandeis Baseball and Softball Teams will kick off their seasons in beautiful (and sunny) Cocoa Beach, Florida. From March 10 through March 17, the Judges battle it out against their greatest UAA rivals. Emory, NYU, Chicago, Carnegie Mellon, Rochester, Case Western Reserve, Johns Hopkins, and Washington will all be on hand... Will you? Don't worry, because you don't have to be, because we will! That's right. We're flying to Florida (freight class) to bring Brandeis and Boston exclusive LIVE coverage of the UAA tournaments. Now you can be there for every single, every double, every tripple and every home run. Just turn on your radio and let US bring you the game.

Fear not, we won't stop there. We'll continue to bring you Brandeis Baseball when the Judges return to Marcus Field on the campus of Brandeis University. Our coverage of Brandeis and national sports continues non-stop (as opposed to our flight) as we bring you up-to-date stories and analysis on Datebook and the SportSide Cafe.

If the baseball strike has got you down, WBRS Sports will lift you up. WBRS Sports -- It's how sports was meant to be heared -- always!

Former Sports Director Lou Fleischer contributed to this article.

Get BRiS'd!

Arin Prisand, Personnel Director

WBRS is a student and community run, non-commercial radio station benefiting Brandeis and the Waltham community. We have broadcast for twenty-six years without the benefit of faculty overseers and we're doing just fine. The WBRS staff is comprised of the students of Brandeis University and members of the local community. Non-profit and non-commercial, we do it all ourselves.

If you are enthusiastic and cooperative, communicate this spirit over the Brandeis airwaves. WBRS is a great place to get involved on campus. We are the voice of the university. We can be heard not only in Waltham, but also throughout the greater Boston area.

Our diverse music library houses something for everyone. Along the same lines, there is a department for everyone. Because we focus on student interests and concerns and because we want all of our members to enjoy being a part of the station, WBRS offers many exciting ways to participate. It is easy to learn and simple to get involved in any or all of the departments. There's no law that says because you're a member of a radio station that you must be a DJ. Where are you most talented? At WBRS you are free to try your hand at News, Arts, Publicity, Business, Tech, Music, Programming, Special Productions, Sports, Public Service, or Personnel. Develop a variety of skills and find out what you enjoy.

WBRS understands students, because, for the most part, we are students. We also recognize that everyone's voice counts. Join the WBRS family and voice your individual concerns. Be a part of the team that has something for everyone.

Not Just Business as Usual

Ronald E. Mesard, Business Manager

As Business Manager, I am responsible for pursuing sponsorship for WBRS. Since we are a non-profit and commercial-free organization, we are unable to rely on paid advertising to fund our needs. Without the help of our sponsors, WBRS would not survive. Sponsorship, or underwriting, is vital to the daily operations around here. The support of our sponsors helps us to afford the major technical repairs that inevitably surface every year.

Our transmitter and antenna received a complete overhaul last fall, so WBRS can once again be heard in the farthest reaches of Boston. Had it not been for the support of our sponsors, the cost of the repairs would have depleted our funds. Although we are generously supported by the students of Brandeis University, the monetary demands of keeping a radio station running and its equipment working are too high to rely soley on funding from the university.

Our sponsors provide more than just funds to pay for repairs. They provide an association with the community outside of Brandeis. Since we broadcast well beyond the confines of the campus, it is crucial that we maintain a positive and productive relationship with our entire listening area. WBRS values the donations it receives every year from those who appreciate the importance of the forum that an all-genre, non-commercial college radio station provides: the opportunity for artists who would otherwise have no means by which to reach a wide audience.

This year, I've been concentrating on updating our mailing list, with the hopes that we might cut our mailing costs by 15-20%. WBRS is proud to consistently produce quality Program Guides and play lists that we distribute worldwide. Our mailing list now runs on a brand new database which will make updating simple. The overwhelming response of reply cards that we got back over the winter has allowed us to correct a substantial amount of sorely outdated address information, as well as establish an e-mail distribution list which we will use to send out listings of upcoming WBRS events, such as our Joint and Coffeehouse schedules, as well as our biannual play lists. More e-mail, less paper and may we all live happily ever after.

Seriously folks, everyone should sponsor WBRS.

Technically Speaking...

James Feinberg, Technical Director

Question: What has a new antenna, new transmitter, the same power as before, but reaches more people with a stronger, fresher sound?

Answer: WBRS-FM .

That's right! We've updated our equipment to bring everyone in the Greater Boston Area the most crisp, clean sound yet.

This means better sounding and clearer All-Genre Music, Brandeis Sports Broadcasts, News, Free Live Music and Special Productions.

So while you're driving through Brookline, Cambridge, or Boston, preset your radio to FM 100 and discover our clean, far-reaching sound.

SPuD: No Small Potaoes

JJ Berney, Acting Special Productions Director

While the Boy Scouts' motto is "Be Prepared", WBRS' is "Be There!" Confused by that statement? Don't Be!

Although you may not have realized it, WBRS is always there. When Senator Kennedy comes to Brandeis, who do you think gets up at 9 a.m. so you can hear his speech without leaving the comforts of your dorm room? When you are sick with the flu and can't celebrate at your friendly neighborhood dance club, who do you think goes there and brings the music right to your radio? And when you're writing a paper at the exact same time that Republican candidates outline their campaigns to the Brandeis and Waltham communities, who do you think brings it to you? We do! WBRS always brings it to you, live.

Remote Broadcasts, live coverage of select speeches and simulcasting of Brandeis social events -- that's our ticket -- so we can be yours. Because we are students, we know what you're interested in. We know what we would like to have brought to our radios. We get out there and bring it to you so you can just sit back and listen. All you need to do to hear what you want to hear is to keep your radio tuned to 100.1 FM. That's us -- WBRS FM.
