Eric Gagne: Boston's Newest Chump

Eric Gagne has been nothing but a disappointment in Boston. Gagne has not had a clean inning yet with the Sox and has blown two saves. In effect, Gagne has cost the Red Sox two games in the standings, allowing the hated Yankees to be just 4 games back of the team that currently has baseball's best record. This sounds awful, but many Red Sox fans are glad that Kason Gabbard left his third start with Texas due to an injury. Since that injury, I stopped cursing the name of Theo Epstein for acquiring Gagne. If the Red Sox plan to stay in first, Eric "I suck" Gagne will need to stop pitching in critical situations.

Gagne after Sunday's game:
“It’s stupid,” he said. “They brought me here to do a job and I’m not doing it. I gotta step up my game. It’s ridiculous. These guys play eight great innings and I go out and blow it. That’s just . . . a shame.
“It’s a bunch of (expletive) is what it is. You go out there and do your job. I’m not doing my job right now. I’m letting everybody here down. I need to step up my game and find my game. That’s it. It’s pretty simple.
“This game is simple. I’m (expletive) this up right now.”

Eric, you're on the right track. You are "(expletive) this up right now."

its painful to watch all this...i think most of rsn is holding its breath with the hope that we do not blow this...if these losses don't light the fire i don't know what will.

Gagne was great in Texas all season long. I think he has just hit a small rough patch. Gagne will step it up, I have no doubt.

Yes Mini he has been great until recently but going from a last place Texas team to the tension-filled AL East BoSox/Yanks rivalry and pennant race is totally different.

Maybe it's first week jitters. But he's also coming off a nasty injury so who knows if he'll even hold up.

4 games is not a large enough sample size to start damning the player or the trade. I know you've got your eyes stuck on the rearview mirror, but try to relax just a little.

Gagne's last 10 outings, including Texas:
Date Opp IP H ER Rel. ERA
8/12 @Bal 0.2 1 1 BlSv 3.62
8/10 @Bal 0.1 3 4
8/8 @LAA 1.0 1 0
8/4 @Sea 1.0 3 1
8/2 Bal 1.0 2 1

(In texas:)
7/24 Sea 1.0 1 0 Sv(16)
7/24 Sea 1.0 1 0 Sv(15)
7/23 Sea 1.0 4 3
7/21 Cle 1.0 1 1
7/16 @Oak 1.0 1 0 Sv(14) 1.23 ERA

In one motnhs time his ERA has gone up nearly 2 runs. In his last 10 outings:
9 IP, 16 H, 11 ER... the bad outings started in Texas, not Boston. He hasn't had a clean inning in ages.
