KG Almost a Laker
Kevin Garnett almost became a Laker but it looks like that isn't going to be the case, unless the Lakers can figure out another way to get it done. According to Chad Ford, the now fallen apart deal would have gone like this: Garnett to the Lakers, Bynum and Odom to Indiana, Jermaine O'Neal to Boston and Gerald Green, Sebastian Telfair #5 pick, & #19 pick to Minnesota.
Talk about an almost blockbuster deal. Now the Lakers are trying to get the deal done just with Minnesota, but it seems a third team will be needed because while the T-Wolves might be interested in Bynum, more will be needed to move KG.
Imagine a Lakers team with Garnett and Kobe though. Suddenly the Lakers would become contenders again and surely the addition of Kevin Garnett would be enough to make Kobe happy. But I don't get this whole ordeal to begin with. If Kobe really wants to play for a winner, which is why he is asking to be traded, why did he drive Shaq out of LA to begin with?

How is it that Boston is the one that pulled out of this trade? It seems like the Wolves are ones getting screwed under this scenario.
Interesting... the rumors I had heard had Jefferson going to Minnesota, which would be an awful deal for the Celts.
Although honestly, I'm not sure adding Kobe and subtracting Odom and Bynum would do much more than get the Lakers five more wins and a first or second round exit.
You don't see those blockbusters anymore....
Instead they just trade money not players
Well it looks like this won't happen. The Lakers can't get this deal done just with Minny. They will need a third and possibly a fourth team. Odom and Bynum isn't enough for KG. And if Minnesota is planning on rebuilding, why even want Odom? I'm sure they would prefer Bynum and two high draft picks.
Boston was right to pull out. Jefferson and the #5 for Jermaine O'Neal? The Celtics would give up their best prospect and a legitimate low-post scorer for a declining O'Neal who has struggled to stay healthy. O'Neal is one of the top defenders in the league, but Jefferson is already a better scorer and has a ton of upside. Sure, Pierce would be happy, but this would make the Celtics a top five team in the East, at best, and probably for only a few years.
It would be a great deal for the Lakers. Kobe and KG would be a perfect combination and they've got good shooters to put around them (Luke Walton and Brian Cook) who could make opponents pay for double-teaming either superstar.
Ummm...Brian did you read the post?
It would have been Green, Telfair and the #5 for O'Neal. With Jefferson/O'Neal, the Celts would have probably the best 4-5 in the East and it would open things up for Delonte, Pierce and Wally. Acquiring O'Neal makes them an instant conference contender in my opinion.
Oops, you got me. I saw the headline and figured it was the 4-team deal that was all over ESPN. That deal is a lot better for Boston, though I'm not sold on O'Neal and I still don't think they could be an elite NBA team with that group. Top three to four in the East probably, but not quite Spurs/Suns/Mavs territory.
Danny Ainge has never liked O'Neal either and that has a lot to do with Boston dropping out of the deal.
I would be disappointed to see any third team step up and help the Lakers get Garnett. Let the Lakers stay on the fringe for awhile.
