Dirk Takes His MVP Campaign to MySpace

After the Dallas Mavericks only produced a single all-star this season after leading the NBA with a 40-9 record, Mavs owner Mark Cuban must have been pissed. Cause after Josh Howard got snubbed, it appears Cuban doesn't want any Mavs to miss out on any more NBA honors...

Naturally when Cuban is upset he ventures into cyberspace. But not his blog this time, but rather the Mavs have created a "Dirk For MVP" MySpace Page.

In all honesty though, you have to doubt the effectiveness of a myspace page like this. I assume most Dallas fans are educated enough to already be driving the Dirk for MVP bus. While the page consists mostly of Dirk graphics supporting his MVP run, there is a little bit of comedy within the page...

The page's most recent post is a Mid-Season Awards article written by John Hareas, who explains why Dirk should be this year's MVP (as if he were going to support anyone else on Dirk's MVP page). But Hareas goes just a tad overboard when he begins the article by claiming that Dirk is so superior to Kobe, Nash and Arenas that he has ascended himself into a class beyond these other NBA stars. A class with Wilt Chamberlain, Jerry West and Michael Jordan. No, seriously...

"Nash, Kobe, Arenas? Try Wilt, West and Jordan. Those are really the players Dirk Nowitzki should be measured against as the first half of the NBA season reached its midway point. The aforementioned contemporary players are all in the mix for first-half MVP honors and rightfully so, but no one has done more to earn this season's MVP award than Dirk. The best player in the NBA has led his team to the best record as the Mavs are cruising on a torrid, historic pace, with no signs of slowing down."

And just like that Dirk's myspace page loses the little validity it once possessed. Well hey, he does already have 2522 friends...So maybe that means the Diggler should be the MVP.

If it's any consolation to Dirk, he is #2 on my list at this point behind DWade.

Dirk needs to be the next caveman in the GEICO ads.

Twins15,

Are you serious about DWade or joking. Please tell me you are joking, I don't know how DWade could be your MVP thus far.

I am very impressed with Dirk and the Mavs so far. They're def. the team to beat.

It's a toss up between Nash and Dirk at this point. I think in the end, with or without the myspace campaign, Dirk will be our 2006-2007 MVP. No way Nash wins MVP for a 3rd year in a row, but unless someone (Arenas, Kobe, Lebron, or Dwade) go nuts in the 2nd half, it's a race between those 2. Hard to imagine they used to be teammates. Just for the record, shouldn't the best comparison for Dirk be Larry Bird? Maybe? Anybody agree, disagree?

Good luck, Dirk. I have a blog on myspace I have yet to garner even ONE VOTE for the All-Star game in any sport.

I do, however, have several hotties willing to charge me a monthly fee to see them naked, so that's something.

I love that D Wade called out Dirk for not being a leader....and hes totally right

Ok... I take back my earlier prediction. The Suns lost tonight, without Nash, at home... to the HAWKS! Chalk it up now - Steve Nash wins his 3rd MVP in a row.

I'm disappointed that WBRS has show cased my 'vote for me as MVP' page.

I mean, yeah I don't play pro sports but ehy, this is the NEW WORLD we're living in here people. You have to think outside the box.

Vote Sanchez for MVP!

err... that should read "has not show cased"

But that doesn't mean you shouldn't vote for me...

I like Dirk, but anytime you have to whore yourself out, especially on myspace, you've gone down a notch in my book.

I'm old school, I guess - I just think you should play the game, do you job, and things will fall into place.

Mini, BTW, thanks for the good words on the Rangers write-up on the blog!

One more week...

Umm... I don't think the Mavericks would have created an official page including a line saying that Dirk "can now kill every opponent in the paint."

I place the over-under on the age of whoever created that page at about 16 –– sharp enough to get together some nice graphics, but too green to compose genuine hype rather than adolescent rantings.

I'm confused by your post's claim that the Mavs put this together. I mean, you actually include an image of the part where it says it's *not* an official Dirk Nowitzki page

As a huge Mavs fan, I'll say that Dirk is an infuriating but exhiliarating player to have on your team. Last season he took us to the highest of highs and the lowest of lows –– and that was just *within* the Spurs series.

I don't know if he'll ever carry Dallas to a championship, but I would say this to Dwyane Wade: real life is not about being perfect and always winning, but rather about learning from your mistakes and always trying to improve. Dirk didn't have what it took last year (at least not in the finals), but he's working his tail off this year to try to get there –– and he's finally started hitting some game-winning shots. Wade's a hard worker too, no doubt, but I love my chances with Dirk, because he works so hard that its seems there's always something better coming from him.

Ok, in defense of Dirk's finals performance last year: He had two awful games, and each team won one of them, so that's a toss-up. In the other four games, Dirk shot 45.5% and averaged 26.3 points and 12 rebounds. He did miss a couple of key free throws late in games (as did Wade in game 6), but if I'm remembering correctly Dirk also made a nice pass to Dampier to take the lead in the last minute of game 5, plus he hit a huge jumper over Shaq to take the lead in the last minute of game 6.

But Wade was better. Plus there were plays like this one at the end of game 6 (I'm astonished *every* time I watch it), where Wade got handed free points, whereas Dirk had to work for all his.

Oh, and by the way –– Dirk has gone 5-0 in deciding games (i.e., game 5 or game 7) of playoff series, and his 25.7 ppg career playoff average is 9th all time (just after Hakeem Olajuwon and just ahead of Shaquille O'Neal) so he clearly knows something about clutch playoff performances.

Still, he didn't get the job done last year, and there's no way around that. But Dirk is a superstar who still improves every season, and it's continuing to pay off for his team. That's some excellent leadership in my opinion.

Scoots,

Thanks for you comprehensive and thoughtful response. However, the Mavs did create the MySpace account.

OK, so I just emailed the guy who wrote that post on the dallas morning news mavs blog (because I still had my doubts), and apparently the Mavericks actually sent out a press release announcing the page.

I stand by my comment that it sounds like it's written by a 16-year-old, though. But then, leave it to Mark Cuban to meet the most enthusiastic fans where they're at.

Wade's a tough call on the MVP vote, because he's been *so* good and his team's been *so* bad. Since MVP is a season-by-season thing, I don't think it should be based at all on last year's finals; in light of that, I think you've got to call Wade a player with gaudy stats who can't get his team the wins they need.

I've got a lot more sympathy for Kobe and Arenas when it comes to MVP talk.

Hey Scoots,

Thanks for the investigation in regard to the source of the MySpace page! I also agree with your assessment of Wade.

And then tonight, Wade goes and gets a win over the Spurs all by himself. (Not that a win over the Spurs is what it once was...)

It's pretty rotten to 1. say dirk took his MVP campaign to Myspace.. Cuban did thius and against dirk's wishes. But the reason Cuban did it is because Dirk was snubbeed the past 2 seasons when he clearly should have bene MVP then too. Then you put a picture of Dirk horsing around while drinking on your page.. Dirty pool.. extremely dirty pool. You obviously have an agenda.

And Dirk IS in the company of the games greatest players like Bird, Magic and Russell. He is doing all this without a second all-star. People say Wade is great... Shaq was the one being double-teamed throughout the playoffs.. NOT Wade. Both Dirk and Shaq were getting all the double teams. The Heat had a second star in wade to go to while Shaq was being doubled.. Dirk didn't.. and even then Wade needed the officials to hand him the championship trophy.

The truly amazing thing is what Dirk has accomplished without getting the preferential treatment other stars like Wade, LeBron, Duncan, Shaq and Kobe get..

This is greatness, the page was made just to create a buzz about Dirk's season and to give his fans a place to express their thoughts. When RJ (Who is 19) and I (Graphics) created the page we had no idea it would get this much attention. I just want to get some things straight.

1. The Mavs didn't create the page.
2. Dirk hasn't even seen the page and really wouldn't even care that it existed.
3. The writer is 19
4. The graphics guy is 30
5. Whoever took the page serious should have stayed in school.

Bottom Line, it was created just for fun...and it has been so far!

Hey, I'm RJ. This is the 16 year old everybody keeps talking about. Like Stevallica stated the page was created for fun and we have been surprised how much media attention is has created. Yes, Stevallica and I are huge Mavs fans and he created all the graphics and I do the blogging on the page. The page is strictly for NBA fans who thinks Dirk is worthy of MVP honors, that is just our purpose for the page. Nothing else.

Oh yes, let me make a small correction. I am 22 by the way, and the about me section was purely my opinion of Dirk. You can agree or disagree, it doesn't matter to me.

I think Dirk Nowitzki should be mvp, I dont care what other people are saying. He is an awesome player , true he has an alright team, with Terry and Stackhouse , but they are not great. Still I believe Dirk can lead the Mavericks to victory
