Could Ron Mexico Actually End Up In Black and Silver?

According to Ben Maller of Fox Sports, the Oakland Raiders are interested in trading for Michael Vick. Maller claims that, "the Oakland Raiders are preparing to make a run at Falcons QB Michael Vick, according to NFL sources. The Raiders package would include receivers Randy Moss and Jerry Porter plus the No.1 overall pick in the 2007 draft for Vick and the Falcons first round pick (10th overall)."

If this trade comes to fruition, it certainly would go down as the biggest trade the NFL has seen since Herschel Walker was dealt by the Cowboy to the Vikings back in 1989. Let's take a look at what a deal like this would mean to each team...

If Vick did go to the Raiders, he would single-handedly change the dynamic of the team's offense. He would find himself in a similar situation to where he currently finds himself in Atlanta, one without any playmakers around him. Perhaps the Raiders could draft Teddy Ginn Jr. or Dwayne Jarrett with the #10 draft pick they would receive from Atlanta. Regardless, even the Atlanta Falcon's Michael Vick would most definitely improve a Raiders team that went an abysmal 2-14 this year. That was in large part to one of the worst offenses ever, an offense so bad that the team only managed two victories with a defense ranked third in yards allowed (yea that is an awful offense).

Although already a 6 year veteran in the league, maybe Oakland could successfully utilize Vick's combination of having both deadly speed and a rocket arm, something Atlanta wasn't really able to do. If aging owner Al Davis wants to see the Raiders return to their winning ways of the past asap then a trade for Vick would make much sense. This is of course opposed to drafting Brady Quinn or JeMarcus Russell with the first pick in the draft and waiting a few years as he developed into possibly a stud quarterback. The trade of course would also allow the Raiders to sever ties with both underproductive Randy Moss and disgruntled Jerry Porter.

From Atlanta's perspective, the past few seasons could be best characterized as wishful thinking, as they hoped Vick would transform back to the 2002 version, the one that lead the Falcons to an NFC Championship game. But since then Vick has struggled mightily and has been heavily criticized. In my opinion, this trade has the potential to push the Falcons all the way to the top of the NFC. It might not, but it has the potential. If Matt Schaub is really as good as everyone says he is than he should be able to succeed in an offense that would include perhaps the best receiving group in the NFL, in Moss, Porter and tight end Alge Crumpler. The #1 pick Atlanta would acquire from Oakland could be used on OL Joe Thomas out of Wisconsin, or the Falcons could even consider trading down.

It is also possible that Moss and Porter, both who have large egos and notorious personalities, could mess things up in Atlanta, a la Terrell Owens in Dallas, Philly or San Francisco. But Atlanta finished 7-9 this season and 8-8 a season ago. Sure Vick is arguably the most athletic football player ever, but the bottom line is that lately Michael Vick and the Altanta Falcons aren't winning ball games. I think the potential reward involved in getting Moss and Porter dramatically outweighs the risk involved in such a transaction.

Thus, looking at this potential trade it seems to make a great deal of sense for both franchises. Oakland suddenly acquires a player so special that in the right system he has the potential all by himself to turn the team into a contender in a very short time. Meanwhile, Vick's recent immoral actions give the Falcons an excuse to trade their high-paid, franchise quarterback who can't seem to carry the team over that last hurdle to the Super Bowl. They would then be able to start the "next Tony Romo" in Matt Schaub and he would have the weapons in Porter, Moss, and Crumpler to succeed immediately and perhaps lead the Falcons to a Super Bowl.

this would really be something for the falcons. come up with two pretty good WRs, get a top overall pick, give schaub a chance to play AND get rid of Vick. Wow, highway robbery if you ask me.

The Sarcastic Idiocy Forum believes that with or without Mike Vick, the Atlanta Falcons are at the very least the third best team in all of Arena Football.

this trade will never happen, for many reasons, one being the cap hit the Falcons would take for unloading Vick. I believe it's in the area of $20 million.

Situ, isn't the cap hit only taken if the Falcons released him?

If Arthur Blank gets offered this trade and doesn't take it, he ought to be forced to sell the team. Screw highway robbery; this is akin to robbing the Bellagio because the security guards gave you the keys.

Yes, trading an overrated coachkiller for 2 wide receivers---remembering that wide receivers never ever imporve a team's win/loss, and are the most useless players on the field.

Talk about a trade the idiotic management of the Raiders/Falcons were born to make. It's like trading cancer for...cancer.

The only upside are the draft picks. They should just trade those straight up.

Thorough take, but it'll never happen.

Salary cap...
Falcons don't want head cases...
Matt Schaub is not that good...

I wrote about it on my blog

They've got to work this deal in such a way that Moss can stay in Oakland. Can you imagine Vick and Moss together? The locker room would look like Snoop's crib.

The bottom line is Michael Vick sucks! Moss and Porter are on the downside of their careers. All three are troublemakers. The Raiders would be better off keeping their first pick and taking Brady Quinn instead of trading for the under talented Vick. Then the Raiders should trade Moss(maybe a 2nd or 3rd rounder) and Porter(maybe a 4th or 5th rounder) and then use those picks for some OLine help or a receiver to give Quinn some protection.

great trade.

Oakland needs to get rid of Moss and Porter. Oakland would basically be getting one of the best QBs in the league (I still believe this...Vick's best receiver has been a TE!) for free. And they would still have the 10th overall pick to get a top WR.

Atlanta desperately wants to let Schaub in on some action and can get two great receivers along with the #1 overall pick. Get Calvin Johnson and they are set.

Let's get 'er done.

Raiders are going after the self proclaimed coach killer Michael Vick to solve their team chemistry problems, Not exactly a decision deserving of a gold star.

The Falcons could come out gold in this if the rumors are true. Along with Moss and Porter would be the Raiders' overall number one pick in the draft.

Brady Quinn anyone?

Have yall seen the SNL skit with Michael Vick ? Its hillarious

Wouldn't usually comment on something like this (as I'm not an Atlanta fan and just got here by accident through Deadspin), but I really must take issue with the guy saying "Matt Schaub is not that good." Reading his blog, he says that the "Falcons don't want to get stuck with Schaub." You may want to check up on his numbers from Virginia and the couple times he started. There's absolutely nothing to support your assertion. I believe he holds the record as the most accurate passer for a season in ACC history. He's been wasted on your bench and Vick is the most overrated player in football. You'd be psyched if this trade happened. Schaub will actually use those "26 receivers" you'll have (as you said in your blog). Use some objectivity if you really want to comment on what is going to make your team better.

Would Vick really work in the Raiders scheme?

I'm not sure I can see it. I can see the Raiders going for the trade of-course, what I mean is, I can't see it working.

(and when did that ever stop the Raiders from doing anything?)
