This Time Loogie Lands In TO's Face - WR Snubbed From Pro Bowl Roster

The 2007 NFL Pro Bowl roster was announced yesterday. For those that don't know, the roster is determined by three sects, as players are voted into the Pro Bowl by the coaches, the players themselves, and the fans. Each group's ballots count for one third of the votes. Okay, now that we are all up to date on how the roster is selected, my beef is simple...Where is TO?

Going into Week 16 in the NFL season, Terrell ranks 5th in receiving yards in the NFC, 1st in receiving TDs in the NFL, and 3rd in receptions among wide receivers in the NFC. And let's not forget that TO is a member of the 9-5 Dallas Cowboys. We assume playing for a playoff team can only add to your resume. Right?

So who made the NFC roster over Terrell Owens? Steve Smith, Torry Holt, Donald Driver, and Anquan Boldin. This is absolute crap, specifically the fact that Anquan Boldin is a Pro Bowler and Terrell Owens is not. Let's take a look at TO's numbers relative to the 4 NFC wide receivers on the Pro Bowl roster.

Torry Holt - 80 rec, 1044 yd, 10 TD
Steve Smith - 76 rec, 1081 yd, 6 TD
Donald Driver - 80 rec, 1173 yd, 7 TD
Anquan Boldin - 75 rec, 1027 yd, 4 TD

and finally,

Terrell Owens - 77 rec, 1040 yd, 11 TD

Okay, so TO has more receptions, yards and TDs than Boldin...further he plays on a winning team.

I have to say this is pure bullshit that he isn't on the Pro Bowl roster. I can only assume that his character had an influence on him missing out. The ridiculous thing about the situation is that Shawne Merriman made the Pro Bowl, a verified cheater. Sure TO has somewhat of a negative reputation as a result of some of his actions, but at least he hasn't challenged the integrity of the game, something Merriman did when he took steroids.

Also, the Pro Bowl is supposed to be about the best players playing together, not the most liked. That is why fan voting only counts as a 1/3 of the final say. So, if you want to boo TO, boo TO. If you hate him that is fine by me. But the Pro Bowl isn't about who you like, it is about who is the best. And the numbers don't lie, TO is one of the four best wide receivers in the NFC. No matter how he acts, no one can deny that.

i'm surprised that he didn't make it b/c he's a jerk...but because he gets attention, you'd think he'd get voted in due to all of his antics. he's the type of guy who sells tickets. people don't know what he's going to do next. he may actually kill himself this time.

Can you include drops in your WR stats assesment?

No, I cannot!

Seriously though, yes he leads the NFL in drops. But at the same time he has 7 more touchdowns than Boldin. Are we really to believe that TO's drops are what caused him to not make the team? Also, take into consideration that TO injured his finger, which may account for some of his drops. In fact, TO elected to not have surgery on his finger, which doctors say may result in permanent damage in the future. However TO did not want to miss any games, thus putting his team ahead of his own long-term health.

Well, OF COURSE Owens is doing it all for the team. Duh.

Yeah because the Pro Bowl is based on how people actually play and not reputations: see every offensive lineman. Also why do they announce the Pro Bowl rosters when there are still two games left in the season?

Saying that his broken finger contributed to all his drops is ignoring his long and proud history of drops. Part of the reason his TD catch in the playoffs against Green Bay was so dramatic is because nobody in the stadium could actually believe that a guy with feet for hands actually held onto the ball. Those drops of his cost the Cowboys at least one game, likely two. If the rest of the NFC wasn't so horrible, TO would have cost the Cowboys the playoffs. Throw all the stats around you want, Pro-Bowl caliber players don't cost their teams like that.

Only reason TO has that many TDs is because Parcells needs to stoke his ego. A few of those easily could've gone Witten or Glenn's way. I think a bigger snub may be Roy Williams with 70-1127.

That being said, I still think TO should've made it, with a bigger mark being his 56 1st downs (2nd in the NFC). I'd take TO, Williams*, Holt* and Driver.

*starter

Your TD argument isn't the strongest ever. Buress has 9 TDs..is he a Pro Bowler? You could also argue that TO's drops cost the Cowboys chances to beat the Redskins and Giants.

Fans get a voice and they didn't want him. No one wants him. Who cares if it's a popularity contest? Anything that means less TO is fine by me.

actually T.O. finished 3rd in fan voting...so they obviously wanted to see him

Of course TO didn't make it because of his attitude. And he brought it about himself - you can't really expect to get much love from players and coaches when you've alineated nearly every player and coach you've ever played with, and managed to single-handedly destroy a team's season.

You reap what you sow - believe me, not many people are gonna lose sleep because poor TO didn't make the Pro Bowl.

MC,

I am glad you think TO should be in the Pro Bowl as well. I have to disagree with you though in regard to Terrell having 11 TDs simply because Parcells wants to stroke his ego. It is Romo throwing the ball to Owens, not Parcells. And even if the play is designed to TO, he still has to get open and catch the ball. And considering he is always guarded by the opposing team's #1 CB, that can be a difficult thing at times, in particular in the red zone.

I think Roy Williams is also deserving. I think there are two ways at looking at Roy Williams. You could argue that TO has the edge over him because he plays for a winning team and thus his numbers are more relevant. However, I believe the argument that Roy Williams deserves to go has some validity as well, because he is the entire Lions offense and opposing teams focus on stopping him and only him, so his numbers are harder to come by.

In the end though, the bottom line is that Boldin made the Pro Bowl and that selection is not only unjustified but also somewhat appalling. I don't think anyone could truly defend the roster spot going to Boldin rather than Terrell Owens or Roy Williams.

Following from my previous comment, the Merriman argument is clearly bogus. Even assuming Merriman is a cheater, at least he isn't throwing his teammates under the bus and constantly disrupting his team.

Robert,

Don't you feel like the Pro Bowl selections should be and have been based purely on performance and statistics? If that is the case, certainly TO is worthy of a roster spot over Boldin. However, like you stated TO brought this upon himself. Yet, what are players, coaches, and fans saying when they vote Merriman in and not TO. Does it mean that being what some people consider to be a "bad teammate" is worse than being an actual cheater of the game? Sure TO has cause some dissension among the 49ers and Eagles locker rooms when he was there, but at least he hasn't challenge the integrity of the game like Merriman did.

T.O. is a fag who cares if he doesn't get to go to Hawaii. He drops too many passes brings his team down psychologically and the fans hate him!

No I am the gay one...silly! Terrell never dropped any balls when I threw to him.

I salute you, fellow T.O. apologist. Check out what I wrote about T.O. and others who got hosed by the haters.

Jeff Garcia said: "Terrell never dropped any balls when I threw to him."

That is because you always carefully placed your balls on his chin...

If you can vote Romo in for his 8 games, why can't you vote Garcia in...who single handedly changed the fortunes of his team....

Pat Williams is the best run-stopping DT in the NFL on a team that is historically good at stopping the run... how does he miss out??

Biggest snub is Pacman Jones. He's been the Titans MVP this season and one of the best CB/KR in the game.

He has been great. It appears he will soon become a top 2 CB in this league, right behind Champ Bailey.
