Brandeis Cheated in Regional IM Basketball Tournament

It's not often that we here at WBRS sports break stories, but the events of last weekend's regional intramural basketball tournament at Boston University must be shared with the world. A team featuring WBRS member Seth Roberts and superguest Sidney Coren went to BU to represent Brandeis at the tournament. After advancing through the round robin stages and winning an elimination game, the team was bounced from the tournament by an intramural squad from Delaware St. The boys from Delaware St. rolled all the way to the championship game, where at halftime they were disqualified for playing with ineligible players. According to Coren, the team had four players from last years varsity team that made the NCAA tournament as a 16 seed before losing to duke in the first round. According to the tournament rules, a player must sit out at least one season after playing varsity basketball. Roberts and Coren believe one player was Aaron Williams, a man who averaged nearly 11 points a game as a Division I basketball player last season.

What makes this all so unfair is that players on the Brandeis team believed they were the next best team in the tournament. However, because they played Delaware St. before the finals, they cannot advance while the team that was lucky enough to not play them until the finals most likely will get the opportunity to go the national tournament. Delaware St., you've just made a very powerful enemy.

This story proves once again that the allowance of former varsity players participating on intramural teams is even less regulated than steroids in baseball!

I would also like to report another intramural injustice that occurred this past Sunday at Brandeis' own Gosman gymnasium. My sad excuse for an IM soccer team had been paired against CSS Red Storm. Upon arriving 15 minutes prior to the game I noticed half the gym was being occupied by soccer plays that seemed familiar to me. Suddenly I realized I recognized all six of the players from the few Brandeis soccer games I attended last year. As the time got closer and closer to 10 pm, the players didn't leave the court. Finally, it was 10 and I assumed the team we were playing had forfeited, meaning we won a playoff game! Unfortunately for me, I was mistaken. In fact, I was finally informed that the soccer players were actually all ex- Brandeis soccer players who had played on the varsity team just one year ago. They were all attending a year of graduate school at Brandeis, giving them intramural eligibilty. Thus, our team in essence played the soccer team and we lost, 16-1. Although we lost, we won the Chad Johnson battle, aka best goal celebration. Upon scoring our team's only goal, I removed my shirt, Brandi Chastain style, only to realize I was not wearing a sports bra, and my team was not a gold medal World Cup quality team.
